Sicko and Bill Clinton on Health and Wellness Trends

September 14, 2009
Have you seen Sicko yet? It is very rewarding.

Order to contribute to the health problem that we live in a better perspective, let me now shares some of the insights and advice that gave us Bill Clinton in San Francisco recently at the event Healthetc California Pacific Medical Center and KCBS sponsored.

Some highlights of the speech:

1) Large Clinton comparative overview of the key data:

* 16 vs 10-11:% GDP on health care in the United States compared to other industrialized countries. This percentage difference equals around 800 billion U.S. dollars per year!

* 84 vs 100:% of population with some form of health insurance in the United States against other countries

* 34 and 37: ranking of the U.S. system as measured by health outcomes and life expectancy or

* 34 vs 19:% health care costs for the administration in the United States moved to other countries

2) President Clinton then outlined the 3 main problems with United Healthcare as follows, empathizing, that everyone must take a serious, long-term solution to these 3 elements as a whole in attack:

* Immoral unequal coverage, where a large percentage of citizens lack access to quality health care

* Inefficient system: we pay more for less, as you could see in Sicko

* We make more use of disease than on health. But he is a stronger focus on wellness hope, absolutely necessary to mitigate future cost pressures

3) Let us think now about some (approximate) quotes of great wisdom

* "I am a witness to the best of American medicine am. Because my heart problems, it's a miracle I'm here today with you. These days I can not be longer than 5 minutes into a bad mood because I am out to remember how happy I am just to be alive "

* (If the people clapped and cheered the simple "sound bites" while he was still trying to make a complex point) "Please stop. I do not want you to cheer or boo, just think about on your own"

Amazing words.

In the afternoon, after his speech, we spent some time talking with health care providers and participating in several plates, as to avoid cooperation with the Alzheimer's Association about the possibility or delaying Alzheimer's disease.

We were surprised at the level of education are still needed to provide medical and health community to scientifically-based advice on lifelong learning and intellectual stimulation on the "traditional" advice around nutrition and physical activity. The Alzheimer's Association is one of the pioneers with their "Maintain Your Brain" campaign, which demonstrates a comprehensive range of health and wellness guidelines, we should pursue all:

1) Stay mentally active: "Mentally stimulating activities strengthen brain cells and connections between them, and may even create new nerve cells."

2) Stay socially active, "Social activity not only makes physical and mental activity more enjoyable, it can reduce stress, which helps maintain healthy connections among brain cells"

3) Stay physically active: "Physical activity is good for maintaining the circulation to the brain and new brain cells, promotion of fundamental importance. It can also significantly reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes, and thus protect against the risk factors for Alzheimer's and other dementias.

4) Adoption of a brain-healthy diet: "The research suggests that high cholesterol can contribute to stroke and brain cell damage. A low fat, low cholesterol diet is recommended. And there is growing evidence that a diet rich in vegetables and dark fruits that contain antioxidants that can protect brain cells. "

No doubt Bill Clinton would be the significance of these guidelines, the baby-boomers can age in a healthy way to ensure and to prevent the health care agreement overwhelmed by the costs associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Let us look attentively what the presidential candidates propose to deal with this situation.
